Our guides are written to answer a practical question, not to fill a page. Here is how we source, review and correct them.
What we cover
BillCanvas writes for freelancers and small businesses in the United States. The guides cover documents (invoices, quotes, timesheets, work orders), getting paid, and the parts of tax and record keeping that affect the paperwork. They are not a substitute for advice about your own situation.
How we research
- Primary sources first: the IRS, state revenue departments, the SBA and official forms.
- Rules that vary by state are described as variable, with a pointer to the state authority rather than a guess.
- We do not invent statistics, quotes, case studies or testimonials.
- Where a number changes yearly — mileage rates, thresholds — we describe the rule and tell you to check the current figure.
How we write
Each guide answers one practical question. We use short sections, worked examples and a clear takeaway, and we link to the relevant tool or template so you can act on it. We avoid jargon where a plain word will do, and we explain a term the first time it appears.
Review and updates
Every guide shows an updated date. We review pages when a rule changes, when a reader reports an error, or when we notice that a page no longer matches the tools. Not every page is reviewed every month; the date tells you when it last changed.
Corrections
If something is wrong, email [email protected] with the page URL, the sentence and a source. We fix substantive errors and update the date. Minor copy edits may not be noted. If a correction changes the advice materially, we will say so on the page.
Independence and funding
The tools and guides are free. The site may show clearly labelled advertising to cover hosting costs. Advertising does not influence which documents we build or what the guides say. We do not accept payment for a positive mention.
Not professional advice
The guides are general information. Tax, legal and accounting rules depend on your facts and your state. For a decision that matters, use a qualified professional or the official source.
